2 Peter 1:10-11
Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Throughout the Bible, God calls ordinary people for extraordinary purposes.
Moses was a shepherd, Samuel was an ordinary child of ordinary parents, Most of the prophets were poor people from poor backgrounds- who were not respected by the world. Peter was an ordinary fisherman when he was called to be an apostle.
God doesn’t wait for perfection—He calls people as they are.
He is not choosing eloquent and capable people, but He builds and trains them up in His own way to be His servants as they are called.
You and I are called for a very specific purpose- We are called to be prophets to the world. Who is a prophet? The one who carries a specific message from God to the people whom he is sent to. We are sent out to the world to preach the gospel of Christ not only with our words but should testify it with our day to day life.
I don’t know how many of us take our calling seriously. Some live for themselves and waste their entire human life like that servant who buried his master’s money-one talent under the soil (Matthew 25:14-30).
Apostle Peter warns the believers to take their calling and election seriously.
A tree with deep roots withstands storms better than a shallow one.
The more rooted you are in Christ, the less shaken you are by trials or temptations.
Apostle Peter paints a beautiful picture—not just entering heaven, but being welcomed richly.
Remember the following three truths throughout our entire earthly life in regards to our heavenly calling.
1. We Are Called By God, Not By Accident
The first truth is simple: Our calling is intentional. You are not here in the Church accidently.
In Jeremiah 1:5, God says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…”
That means your life is not an afterthought—God planned you with purpose.
Ephesians 1:4
“For He chose us in him (Christ) before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight”.
Psalms 139:16
“Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be”.
John 15:16
“You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you”
Likewise, Romans 8:30 tells us that those God calls, He also justifies and glorifies. Calling begins with Him, not us.
Isaiah 46:10 “God declares the end from the beginning”
You are called because God chose you.
We are called for Eternal Purpose!
Your calling goes beyond this life.
Imagine, a master artist like Leonardo da Vinci preparing to paint. He doesn’t randomly throw paint—every stroke is intentional.
In the same way, your life is not random. God designed every detail.
In Philippians 3:14, Paul says:
“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God…”
Your calling has eternal significance, not just temporary impact. Everyday we spend on this earth has eternal implications.
2. We Are Called Into A Relationship
Before God calls you to do anything, He calls you to Himself.
God knows your name, your story, your struggles.
Isaiah 43:1
“I have called you by name; you are mine.”
Isaiah 49:16
"See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me"
In 1 Corinthians 1:9:
“God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with His Son…”
Christianity is not just a religion—it’s a relationship with Jesus Christ.
Christianity is not just knowing about God — it is knowing God.
Your first calling is not a role—it’s a relationship.
Think about your phone. It can have amazing features, but without connection (Wi-Fi or signal), it can’t function fully.
In the same way, without connection to God, we don’t live to our full purpose.
Consider Mary and Martha in Luke 10. Martha was busy doing things for Jesus, but Mary chose to sit with Him.
Jesus said Mary chose the better thing.
God didn’t call you just to do—He called you to be with Him.
Mark 3:14
Jesus appointed twelve disciples—designated as apostles—primarily to be with him.
We are called to be transformed.
Christianity is not just a set of rules — it is a transformed life!
Following Christ isn’t about behavior modification—it’s about heart transformation.
Being with God and living in His presence will change our life automatically.
In Romans 12:2:
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”
A caterpillar doesn’t just improve—it becomes a butterfly. Total transformation.
God’s calling isn’t about making us slightly better—it’s about making us new.
Think about Peter. He went from denying Jesus to boldly preaching on the day of Pentecost. Same person—but transformed by God into a powerful vessel.
And in 1 Peter 1:15, we read:
“Be holy in all you do.”
We are called to become more like Christ in character, not just in appearance.
3. We Are Called To Serve
Calling is not just about having a new identity—it’s about a new mission.
The Great Commission is not optional—it’s a calling for every believer.
We are called to work for the Master.
Are we working for God’s Kingdom?
Think of a servant living for himself and ignoring the service of his master. How will he be treated by his Master?
We have so many opportunities to serve the Lord. But some of us do not care for it. We have our own way of doing things. We come to the Church, sing, pray and do something in the Church- that one day or two. The rest of the week, we don't work for the Lord. We are so busy with our personal life.
Matthew 28:19–20
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Adam was created by God, not to enjoy his selfish lifestyle. He was created for a purpose.
Adam was told to work in the garden.
Genesis 2:15
“The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”
Think about your son, eating from your house, taking all advantage of you but not working and supporting you.
And Matthew 5:16 reminds us to let our light shine before others.
You are called to make a difference where you are.
We are called to Share the Gospel.
Every believer has a commission.
This is not just for pastors or leaders—it’s for all who follow Christ.
A man once saw a child on a beach throwing starfish back into the ocean after a storm. There were thousands of them. The man said, “You can’t make a difference.”
The child threw one more and said, “It made a difference to that one.”
We are called to be witnesses, not spectators.
You don’t have to change the whole world—just be faithful where you are, you can influence the people around you, at least bring one person to Christ in your lifetime.
If we found the cure for a deadly disease, would we keep it to ourselves? Of course not.
The Gospel is the cure for sin—we’re meant to share it.
We read in the gospel of John (John 4),
After encountering Jesus, the Samaritan woman ran back to her town and told everyone. She wasn’t trained or perfect—but she was willing.
We don’t need to know everything—We just need to share what Jesus has done for us.
1 Peter 2:9
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light”.
Yes!
We are called and chosen to declare the praises of our Lord to a people who are living in darkness.
We should live our life out before them- to testify the work of our Lord in us so that they would see, we are called out of darkness into His wonderful light!
