Matthew 4:16/ Isaiah 9:2
“The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned”.
We read in John 1:5,
"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."
The ‘darkness’ mentioned in this verse is not the natural, physical darkness we have in the absence of light. The "darkness" refers to spiritual darkness. It represents humanity's ignorance of God, the power of sin, and the fallen world's active rebellion against the truth. Essentially, it is a state of spiritual blindness and separation from the divine.
Evil and spiritual blindness can never extinguish or overpower the light of Christ.
The spiritually blind world often fails to recognize or understand the divine truth standing right in front of them.
This darkness is a real, active force in the world, rather than simply the absence of light.
Bible knowledge is not the fencing to protect you from darkness entering. Think about Pharisees. They knew scriptures more than anyone. But they were living in total darkness that they couldn’t even identify the Messiah, who they had been waiting for.
We read in Matthew 15:14/ Luke 6:39, what the Lord said about them.
“Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch”
They were living in darkness with all their bible knowledge.
John 8:12
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
We may very often get through the season of darkness but don’t let the darkness enter into you. It’s something like a ship sailing through the ocean, but it won’t let a single drop of water get in!
In 1 Thessalonians 5:4-5 the Bible warns, "But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness”.
Darkness is one of Scripture's most powerful images. It represents sorrow, fear, sin, confusion, injustice, grief, temptation, and seasons when God seems silent. Nearly every believer eventually walks through darkness—not because they have failed, but because they are human.
The danger is not simply entering a dark season.
The danger is allowing the darkness to enter us.
There is a difference between walking through darkness and being swallowed by it.
The Bible never promises that we will avoid the valley. It promises that God will meet us there.
Can we reflect on the ‘darkness’ the Bible talks about?
1. Darkness Always Tries to Become Your Identity.
One of the enemy's greatest strategies is to convince people that what they are experiencing is who they are. We have a divine identity now in Christ. Darkness always tries to take over it silently.
Ephesians 5:8 "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord."
What was our identity before our conversion? We were darkness!. The devil wants to take us back to that old identity.
A person may experience:
depression
disappointment
betrayal
failure
loneliness
But darkness whispers:
'This is who you are now.'
The enemy wants temporary pain to become our permanent identity.
When Job lost everything, he sat in ashes.
His circumstances changed.
His identity did not.
He remained God's servant even while questioning.
Likewise, you may be walking through grief. But grief is not your name.
You may be fighting fear. Fear is not your identity.
Darkness says:
‘You belong to me’
God says:
‘You belong to Me’
Who do we listen to and believe?
A python does not kill with venom.
It kills with pressure.
Every time the victim exhales...
the snake tightens.
Little by little.
Breath by breath.
Eventually there is no strength left.
This is how darkness often works.
Every disappointment...
it tightens.
Every accusation...
it tightens.
Every failure...
it tightens.
Every sleepless night...
it tightens.
The enemy wants to squeeze the joy out of you.
The hope out of you.
The vision out of you.
Until you believe you cannot breathe spiritually anymore.
But Christ breaks what darkness wraps around us.
2. Darkness Grows When It Is Fed.
Ephesians 5:11-14
“Do not participate in the useless deeds of darkness, but instead even expose (or reprove) them;”
Darkness is never satisfied. It grows where it is nourished. Small compromises become habits. Unforgiveness becomes bitterness. Discouragement becomes despair.
This is why Scripture repeatedly tells believers to guard the heart.
The enemy rarely destroys people in one dramatic moment. He often erodes them one small surrender at a time.
Then the tide comes in.
Soon the water reaches their knees.
Then their waist.
Then a powerful wave knocks them down.
Now they are no longer standing—they are fighting just to breathe.
The danger was never the first wave.
The danger was allowing the tide to carry them farther than they realized.
Darkness often works the same way.
Very few people wake up one morning completely overwhelmed.
It begins with one disappointment, one compromise, one secret sin, one bitter attitude.
But if left unchecked, the darkness keeps pulling until a person is no longer standing—they are simply trying to survive.
The devil does not need to destroy you in one moment. He only needs to keep pulling you farther from the shore.
But Christ is like the lifeguard who enters the raging sea. He does not stand safely on the shore shouting instructions. He comes into the water, reaches the drowning person, and brings them back to solid ground.
3. The Enemy Isolates You In Darkness.
Darkness takes you to loneliness.
One of the first things discouragement says is:
‘Withdraw’
‘Don't answer the phone.’
‘Don't go to church.’
‘Don't pray.’
‘Nobody understands you.’
God designed the church so that when one person's faith grows weak, another carries them.
Sometimes you cannot sing. Someone else sings until your voice returns.
Sometimes you cannot pray. Someone else prays for you and encourages you.
Who do we fellowship with? Are they dependable? Do they encourage you to Christ?
That’s the very reason, the Bible warns us to be very careful about our friends and those whom we spend time with.
2 Corinthians 6:14-17
“Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?”
Matthew 8:12
While the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
-If submitted to God, He Often Does His Greatest Work in the Dark
Seeds grow underground. Children develop in the womb. Stars become visible at night.
Some of God's greatest works begin where human eyes cannot see. The Scripture teaches the way God works in the lives of His people, when everything seems unfavourable.
Joseph spent years forgotten in prison.
David spent years hiding in caves.
Elijah hid in despair beneath a tree.
Jonah cried out from the belly of a great fish.
Paul wrote letters that changed history while imprisoned.
None of these places looked like victory. Yet heaven was still working.
The silence of God is not proof of the absence of God. Sometimes God is preparing what He has not yet revealed.
During a solar eclipse, the sun appears to disappear.
The world becomes strangely dark.
Birds stop singing.
Temperatures fall.
Everything feels different.
But something important has happened.
The sun has not stopped shining.
It has simply been hidden from view.
Many believers experience spiritual eclipses.
They say,
‘I can't feel God’
‘I can't hear God’
Just because you cannot see the light does not mean the light has stopped shining.
The eclipse passes.
So is God. He is always there!
4. Jesus Entered Our Darkness
Matthew 4:16/ Isaiah 9:2
“The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned”.
Christianity is unique because God did not remain distant from suffering.
Jesus entered into our human life and lived a perfect life to be an example and encouragement for us.
He experienced:
Rejection, betrayal, loneliness, injustice, physical suffering, death
Even on the cross, darkness covered the land (Matthew 27:45/Mark 15:33).
Yet that darkness did not win.
The cross appeared to be a defeat in the sight of the world.
But it became the doorway to resurrection and source of salvation.
- Faith Is Choosing Light Before You Feel It
Faith is obedience in uncertainty.
Peter stepped out of the boat while the storm still raged and the waves were still roaring.
Faith moved before circumstances changed. Every man of God, when they obeyed their master, still their circumstances were bad. But they started the journey in faith.
Sometimes choosing light looks foolish.
Small acts of obedience often become the path out of great darkness.
God has opened a way for us to come out of darkness and overcome the traps of the enemy. We have been called into the kingdom of light.
Colossians 1:13-14
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
